The Climax of Electioneering

"Never associate with someone whome you cannot be proud of - whether you works for him or he works for you."

A train of events occurred on the penultimate day of the election campaign – some were dramatic, some were absurd, some were violent, some were amusing. The acts of violence were beautifully timed – the UDF leaders would not be in a position to address public meetings or give statements to the Press after 5 p.m. on 11th April and the media would not be allowed to report the happenings until after 13th April…
Here is a sample. Read on…
1.The Jamat-e-Islami formally announced its support to 124 out of the 140 LDF candidates, thereby bringing its illicit relationship with the CPM out in the open.
2.The JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav, a BJP ally, announced that the party was withdrawing its candidate at Malampuzha in favour of VS Achuthanandan. Barely an hour later he announced rather sheepishly that Sushma Swaraj had talked him out of it! The BJP probably had an ulterior motive in giving the seat to the JD(U) in the first place. The JD (U) perhaps had a pre-planned agenda to ditch its own candidate at the last minute. And what was the pay-off? Cash or votes? God Only Knows. In northern Kerala the RSS and the CPM are still at each other’s throats. Was the deal made down South? Who was responsible for the kiss-and-make-up drama that was abruptly withdrawn? Was it designed to send an unmistakeable message to the pro-BJP voters that they should cast their votes in favour of VS???
3. Now the proof of the CPM’s illegitimate dalliance with those it once called ‘anti-national’ and ‘extremist’ is there for every citizen to see. Is it an act of desperation by a dying Party? Or is there more to it, something more sinister….?
4. In Aryanad, Thiruvananthapuram, LDF miscreants attacked Congressmen who were campaigning for former Minister, G Karthikeyan. Four leaders ended up in hospital and two vehicles were destroyed.
5. At Venjaramoodu, on the outskirts of Thiruvanthapuram, the followers of Marxist veteran Koliacode Krishnan Nair, pelted stones and rotten eggs on Sindhu Joy who was campaigning for the UDF candidate. She was injured and is in the ICU at Thiruvanthapuram Medical College with a concussion on her head.
6. At Kalliasseri in Kannur (birthplace of late CM, E K Nayanar) the Leftists attempted to manhandle the Congress candidate Advocate Indira.
7. In the meantime, VS Achuthandanan is going around talking about protecting the chastity of all our women and girls! What about safety, my dear friend?
8. In Poonjar, Kottayam, PC George of the Kerala (M) was pelted with rotten eggs and his son was manhandled. Who did it? Please don’t ask!
9.At Ponnani, Malappuram the election office of the UDF was attacked and one person was seriously injured.
10.At Udumbanchola, Idukki, a UDF meeting was attacked by CPM activists and four Congress men were injured.
11. Achuthanandan referred to Rahul Gandhi as “Amul Baby.” It comes as no surprise that VS envies Rahul’s youth and good looks. (Most people would.) Someone gave him a Malayalam poem to read, thinking it would be a tit-for-tat reply to Rahul’s reference to Achuthanandan’s age, but he did not read it properly. (Kurangante kayyil poomaala pole…)
12.Advocate P Sreedharan Pillai of the BJP remarked that Achuthandan’s style resembles that of Josef Stalin

Laptops for the Leftists

The Marxists opposed computers in the sixties and seventies because they feared that their introduction would cause widespread unemployment. And what happened? The IT boom created millions of jobs and brought prosperity to virtually very household. Today our children need not migrate to the Gulf in order to earn a decent livelihood. They can work in their own home State. And of course, the Leftists are carrying laptops! Recently, the LEFT Government distributed laptops to all the 140 MLAs. It took them over 4 decades to realize the worth of computers.

The Left even opposed tractors on similar grounds. Today Kerala has neither tractors nor agriculture. They opposed the entry of self-financing private institutions in the higher education sector. Today Kerala is far behind the other South Indian states in field of education. People send their children to other states to study medicine, nursing, engineering, hotel management and other courses. Non- resident Keralites send their children to UK and USA and Australia. This is what the Marxists have done for Kerala.
The same people who once made snide remarks against those who travelled in air-conditioned cars and worked in A.C. rooms, are now going around in fancy cars, sleeping in A.C. rooms and travelling by air even from Trivandrum to Kochi. Now, all of a sudden, they are finding helicopters unacceptable. Even in the days of the Ramayana, we had Ravana flying past in his ‘Pushpaka Vimana’. And our Marxist friends in the 21st century are objecting to the use of helicopters in the election campaign. The moment the Marxist Party buys a pair of helicopters the perception of the Red brigade will change. Just wait and see what they do in 2016!

The Television – Our Election Symbol

My election symbol is the TELEVISION. It suits me well as I am an actor in Malayalam films and TV serials. I consider myself fortunate to have survived in the film industry for over 25 years. The Election Commission obviously has a sense of humour, for they have allotted to my Party the most appropriate symbol I could have hoped for.

From the point of view of the voters, the television is not an ordinary gadget. It is the most precious object in every household. (Television addiction is perhaps stronger than all the other addictions put together!)
Our Party, the Kerala Congress (B) is contesting two seats, viz. Kottarakara and Pathanapuram. We are part of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). Dr. N N Murali, a well known surgeon, is our candidate from Kottarakkara. He is a competent professional, and enjoys the confidence of our Party Chairman and my father, R Balakrishna Pillai.
I anticipate that the voters of Kottarakkara and Pathanapuram will turn out in large numbers to cast their votes for the TELEVISION symbol. It was also heart-warming to receive messages from Non-Resident Keralites saying that they would come to Kerala to vote for us. We feel blessed.
We hope to win both seats with a thumping majority – with the support of the voters and the blessings of the Almighty. And we have no doubt that the people of Kerala will vote according to their conscience and choose in every constituency the right man or woman to represent them. The UDF has worthy candidates in all the constituencies, and national leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, AK Anthony, Vayalar Ravi, and several others have come to Kerala to lead a spirited campaign for their victory.
May the UDF gain an unpredecented victory in the Kerala Election 2011. God bless Kerala! Jai Hind!

UDF prevails on Pillai to back out

Thiruvananthapuram: The United Democratic Front leadership on Wednesday prevailed upon Kerala Congress(B) leader R. Balakrishna Pillai to back out from his decision to contest from the Kottarakara constituency in the Assembly elections.
Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy and UDF convenor P.P. Thankachan met Mr. Pillai in jail this evening to express their objection to his move to file nomination papers for Kottarakara.
An official note issued by Mr.Chandy's office said that Mr. Pillai had informed the two leaders that there was no legal bar on his contesting from the seat and that he had taken such a decision because of the wish expressed by UDF workers in the constituency that he should contest.
“He said he had no intentions of fighting the elections in spite of the ground support he had received,” the statement said.

A Charge-Sheet for the Ghost of Stalin

Hon. Chief Minister, we the people of Kerala charge you with the following acts of commission and omission during your 5 year misrule:
1.When you speak to the Press you invariably read from a paper. Whenever you speak on your own, you either spew venom or heap contempt on your political adversaries. Vayalar Ravi aptly remarked that you have been possessed by the ghost of Josef Stalin, the erstwhile Russian leader who mercilessly disposed of all his enemies. Is this what you are dreaming of doing? Sending all your opponents to jail? Don’t you realize that times have changed? That this is the 21st century and that you are no longer in Russia, but in God’s Own Country?
2.Your Government put the Vizhinjam Port in cold storage for 5 years.
3.You singlehandedly stalled the Smart City project for 7 years.
4.You had to reverse many of your high profile decisions like the Munnar Operation Demolition and the Golf Club Closure.
5.You turned a blind eye to all the allegations leveled against your son, V A Arun Kumar, by various persons across the social, political, and industrial spectrum. Even after a written complaint was given by the Leader of the Opposition, you did not order a police investigation, but forwarded it to the Lok Ayukta instead.
6.When your erstwhile comrade in arms, M R Shaji, revealed that he had collected Rs. 5 lakhs from a liquor contractor and delivered it to you at your residence during the Mararikulam election campaign, you simply branded him a liar and did not order an enquiry. The same night Shaji’s house was attacked by ‘unidentified persons’. Your former secretary K M Shahjahan came out with startling revelations in his book “Chuvanna Adalangal” – again no enquiry was ordered. When you begin to handcuff all the corrupt politicians, why don’t you start with your own self?
7.After the Elections were announced, your Government issued 8 bar licenses and illegally appointed thousands of hand-picked candidates to various government posts, throwing all norms and procedures to the winds.
8.You showed utter disrespect for the women of Kerala when you described your opponent Lathika Subhash as “aetho oruthi” and your former comrade Sindhu Joy as “oruthi.” You also made a snide remark that the media should investigate how Lathika Subhash became famous.
9.You were so worried about what Kunhalikutty did in the distant past, that you had no time to think about what your Government should do for Kerala.
10.You got the parents of Kiliroor victim Shari arrested when they observed a peaceful strike outside your official residence. That was the height of irony! The same man who solicited votes proclaiming that if elected he would put all sex offenders behind bars, turned the police on the long suffering parents of the hapless victim.
11.When P Sasi, political secretary to late CM, E K Nayanar, wrote to the Party accusing you of trying to influence the Justice Mohan Kumar Commission in the Kalluvathukkal liquor tragedy case, you did not order an enquiry.
12.When P Sasi was accused of sexual harassment (or was it sexual assault?) by the wife of a DYFI leader, where was your much-trumpeted morality? Is this not an offence under the law? Four months have passed since this incident became public knowledge, and your Government has not raised a finger. When it is an in-house job, is sexual harassment acceptable? Is the law of the CPM above the law of the land?
13.Your Government let Sabarinath of the total4you scam escape while he was out on bail. The investigation has reached nowhere and the prime accused has disappeared. Amen.
14.The Merchiston estate sale to ISRO in 2007 by a company owned by Xavi Mano Mathew was the most dubious land deal facilitated by your Government. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan stayed for 5 years in a house owned by this person. No wonder he enjoys supreme protection!
15.Lottery king, Santiago Martin paid 2 crores to Deshabhimani and when the news became public the money was ostensibly returned. Faris Abubacker took over the century-old Deepika newspaper by a series of machinations and tied it to the CPM stable. IG of Police, Tomin J Thachankery made unauthorized trips to various locations, including the Gulf, and the reasons are yet to be disclosed. Your Government made no attempt to unearth these scams.
16.The Puthur tragedy, followed by the custodial death of Sampath, the subsequent wishy washy investigation by the Kerala Police, all stand exposed today thanks to the CBI. Who was your Government trying to protect?
17.You had sent a 300 page document to the CPM Politburo alleging that Pinarayi Vijayan was guilty of corruption in the Lavalin case. Why did you not file a case against him in the Court? You cleverly used it as a bargaining counter to make sure you got the CM’s post in 2006.
18.Your Government denied parole to veteran leader R Balakrishna Pillai on specious grounds, but granted parole to hardened criminals at the drop of a hat.
19.When the LEFT MLAs attacked media persons and threatened UDF candidates and election officials, you had nothing to say except ‘unfortunate’. Even the lyricists who wrote songs for the UDF campaign were threatened by LDF goons. A stage erected for the country’s Defence Minister at Kannur was demolished by ‘unidentified’ Leftists. And you took no action.
20.You and your Ministers failed to understand or acknowledge that the Congress-led UPA Government under Dr. Manmohan Singh managed to steer the country through the difficult years of the global recession. You were quick to take credit for all the people-friendly schemes introduced by the Central Government. And you kept on blaming the Centre for all the woes of the State, which arose as a direct consequence of your misrule.
Hon. Chief Minister, on receipt of your reply, we the people will decide whether God’s Own Country needs to elect the Devil’s Own Candidates…
